    No.

Part of any GOOD martial arts lesson set, are exercises to build and develop the right kind of strength, flexibility, endurance, etc. for the martial art itself. In theory, there should be no need for any exercises other than the ones included with the martial arts lessons.

Start your MA training NOW. Add as much strength training as you like. Find some information on stretching as well and put it into practice. Strength will come in some degree with MA training all by itself. If you find you're still lacking, then pump some iron and do calisthetics. Or take up a sport you like in addition as well. It's all going to help. :)

Don't worry about strength; it will come. The real strength is the inner strength, your dedication and determination are more important. Don't put=off your training to build strength. Depending upon your style (as discussed by others) you will require flexibility over strength (one can negate the other). Be sure to learn from someone who is not just interested in making money. Too many Instructors are like that. There's no quick, easy or 'guaranteed' way of getting a black belt. It takes years of training, dedication and practice. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

Look for the style that fits YOU! - Not the other way round. Find a style that will allow you to build on your strengths, you will only ever be as good as your application of what you learn!

Before you can decide which of the Martial Arts is for you, it is important you understand what they are and to get an idea for what purposes they were developed.

There are many factors to be taken into account:- your physiological make up, are you slim and fast, large and strong, young and fit, older with restricted movement? Whatever describes you best there is a Martial Art to suit you, but you must do your homework both here and preferably out on the road. By this I mean go and visit the different clubs in your area, it will surprise you once you start looking how many different clubs there are in a small radius.

take a look at this site and it will tell you more on the different types of martial arts available.

I would begin by referring to myself as a 21 year old young MAN. You are a little old to be a boy.

Be careful. If you take Martial arts and get cocky and allow yourself to get into a fight, You might win but if you try a move and it does not work The person you are going against will out muscle you and beat you up bad.

I am not strong, and I had gotten into a fight with a kid who was smaller and I did win, so he took Karate classes (I did not know about it,) He then picked a fight with me 6 months later and tried a few moves on me, but did not get me down or hurt. I got a hold on him wrestled him to the ground and hit him 30 times in the ribs and gut then 20 punches to the jaw to KO him for 1 hour.
He later got a black belt but he apologized to me for starting both fights with me and we became friends, and he acctally saved my butt one time when some punk ambushed me from behind, he then got him good, it is the onlt time he had to use it in the 20 years we have known each other.

One factor you have in your favor is that you are going into your Twenties.

For most men, this is a time when their bodies naturally start to bulk up. So, if you're engaged in strenuous exercise, your results will be enhanced by this natural tendency.

Good luck and Go for it!

I was a 98-lb weakling out of college, and started taking martial arts at age 26 or so. I agree w/ the above answers - don't wait until you're "in shape" to get in shape. If I were to do it over again I'd do pushups and situps, maybe buy a couple solid weights to do curls and lifting over the head, but more just because it gives you a better self-image and confidence (or it did for me).
