I can't play burned CDs with the MP4a extension on a regular CD player. I followed the instructions on iTunes and set the preference for Audio CDs, but it didn't work. What's wrong?

"Regular" CD players adhere to the Sony / Philips Red Book standard, although some players are fairly flexible in their interpretation of the standard. The Red Book defines the data storage format used on an audio CD. Red Book CD players cannot play MPEG-format files, because they do not adhere to the standard - and never will.

Note: some forms of copy-protection are implemented in ways that violate the Red Book standard. Many CD players can still play them, because they are flexible enough in their interpretation of the standard to handle these disks. Some players cannot play them; neither can computer CD drives, which is the point of the exercise. Philips has demonstrated concern over this process and has requested that disks that violate the Red Book standard not display the trademarked CD logo. Their position is that a disk that does not adhere to the Red Book standard is not a proper CD and the companies that produce these disks are in violation of the trademark.

The DualDisc format, combining an audio CD and a DVD on the same disk, also violates the Red Book standard on the CD layer.
