    It's cleaning itself. Just as animals lick and chew their fur, insects have to clean their carapaces and due to their rigidity (because of the carapace plates) they use their limbs.

    I worked in an entymology lab for a while and I can say that flies look even worse under a microscope and even though they clean themselves they're still covered in disease.
