  • I believe the primary responsibility of government should be to protect its citizens, especially from foreign invasion or a violent rebellion/insurgency. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course, one could say things have become more complicated than that, but the primary purpose should still be considered. If you consider the horrors of 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing, then no, the government is not fulfilling its purpose.
  • To build and maintain the roads, protect the borders, issue currency, punish criminals, collect taxes. Maybe a few other things I forget about. Presently, the US government is seeing the roads deteriorate, the borders becoming a joke, the currency going into the tank, criminals making too many deals, and taxation becoming lopsided against those who can least afford it while social programs for illegal aliens absorb so much of the nation's wealth. Our government is in trouble.
  • Well, you won't find it in the books on this topic I supposed, but the proper purpose of government is to facilitate living together on the planet harmoniously -- i.e. with a minimum of conflict and a maximum of happiness. The main reason government is needed is because we all have to share the world, and we have a tendency to be self-centered. So this produces the conditions that lead to conflict and competition, and government is valuable for its ability to mediate the conflicts, establish "ground rules" for sharing and competition, and generally organize certain aspects of life for maximum benefit of the population as a whole. Is government fulfilling its purpose? To some degree. Obviously the degree of success depends on what country you're talking about, and all countries have a long way to go in this regard.
  • I would not say that my government is really doing that good of a job.My feeling is that Sweden is the closed case to a properly run government by far ,and miles ahead of other counties.
