  • I go by the smell, It makes me laugh when I see Volvic Mineral Water "Pure because of 1000's of years running thru rocks" best before Dec 2007
  • Look at the wording closely - best by, sell by and 'USE BY'(in particular) - actually mean what they say. Best by.... the warning is just there to tell you it's not going to have any flavor at some point. Sell by....is advising the purchaser & store. Again, probably more for flavor and consistency than safety - in most cases. Use by....is more specific for a reason. As far as the 'use by' date - in most cases it's probably safe to eat something past that. 14 months past it is probably excessive though.
  • You've got a nose, use it! Your nose is a good way to tell if somethings off. Sometimes if it's something i can not tell by smelling it, then i put a little on my finger and taste it. You taste buds will let you know pretty fast! Personally with dairy products, i don't go over the expiry date past 3 days, because they can make you very sick of course!
  • I work in food, and the way food dates wok are as follows - BEST BEFORE - states that a food is at it's best before the date given, can still be eaten after at your own risk, and can still be sold to you providing they advise you before purchase USE BY - must be used before this date for a very valid reason - natural bacteria levels within the food multiply, and after the date given on the container, may cause food poisoning, it is illegal for someone to sell you an item past it's use-by date Frozen foods are generally ok, because once the temperature reaches -18 degrees, the temp of most freezers, bacteria pathogens become dormant and cannot multiply - i would be careful with dairy products though, just in case x x
