  • No but i think he might gain a good few more fans for football along the way.
  • I highly doubt it. But he will create a lot more interest in the sport. But there is no way soccer is going to surpass football, basketball, or baseball in US... at least for a long time.
  • Not even close. It would be quite an accomplishment to get it in to the top 5.
  • No of course not but he will not do the great sport any harm and can only raise its profile a little more than at present.
  • No, but he will certainly make it more popular.
  • There is no way soccer will ever be the the number one sport in the US. The whole Beckham thing is going to be more of a pop culture thing here, especially with his wife doing the tv show and all. It will be like the Osborne's or something. No disrespect to Beckham, I think it is great that US soccer is trying to get more appeal here, but it cannot compete with so many large, established sports and their history here. Soccer has no history here which is why it struggles so much.
  • Not by a long shot, yeah he may be a celebrity, but that doesn't change the sport, it is still soccer when it comes down to it.
  • If he was that fun to watch, we'd have watched him play for England on TV...soccer sucks and america will never care about it...on a side not, the Beckham's suck and i envy england for being rid of them...thats what we get for dumping madonna on the british
  • No, I think the man's overrated.
  • No more than Pele' could thirty years ago!
  • Not in a million years. He and his wife are both farces and neither that talented. This is nothing more than hero worship for the stupid.
  • Football I refuse to call it 'soccer') is a game of passion that is played and enjoyed in almost every country in the world. There is skill, positioning and tactics at play all the time. From the comments I have read above. I can only assume that some people do not really understand the game, it is 90 minutes long, doesnt stop for an ad breaks, you dont need padding and can be played with a couple of jumpers an a ball on any street or park. Baseball. American Football and Basketball are enjoyable enough, but do not inspire the passion of "the beautiful game". Is it also a coincidence that the only team sports the US go for, are the ones that they have no international competition in?
  • Not with American football, basketbal, and baseball being so popular. I don't believe any player could make soccer number one here. I love the game, but very few of my friends share that enthusiasm. I think that speaks for most Americans. I don't even think the US winning the World Cup would change it. That might give the sport a higher profile here, but the big three will probably never be seriously challenged.
  • No way!
  • No but I can't wait to see Posh'd sex tape!
  • I say Yes!
  • i dont think he will he might be going to england
  • No. Not unless he is able to redefine soccer to mean "football" (American football). Otherwise, the simple fact of the matter is that we, as a nation, don't care about soccer.
  • He made it the highest-paying sport in the US hehehe.
  • the only thing david beckham is good at is being a total wanker ...and soccer will never be #1 in the U.S....it will be the same as it is in Australia ..a second string sport
  • If he keeps on "Bending it like Beckham", he will certainly make it more popular. As to its becoming #1, I have my doubts. Our own brand of 'football' is too culturally ingrained.
  • I don't think so. Football, baseball and basketball already have a niche in the US.
  • not a chance he is just all hype created by the english media- a good player yes but a world legend-no way-in his whole career he never even won a footballer of the year title-best english midfielder in the last 10 years-paul scholes - ah but hes not pretty enough for the media-gridiron baseball basketball rule in the states and always will
  • No way! Hes only one man, and to be fair, not THAT great any more! Americans will always be more passionate about American Football i reckon
  • Absolutely not. We Americans prefer our more violent form of football.
  • no he's not the player he used to b
  • There's no way soccer will ever be the #1 sport in the US. Football has way too big a head start. Personally, I hate football. The point of the game is to knock people over. It's stupid.
  • I really dont think he will beacuse there are many sports in america for example Baseball and Basketball and Ice Hockey and American Football and they are far more popular than david beckham will ever make football in the U.S.A, beacuse only 1 man cant change that!
  • I doubt it. For that to happen, you need people to give up other sports that they are die hard fans of.
  • Not a snowball's chance in hell. It's far too gentle a game for an audience that has grown up with WWE and American Football.
  • NOOOOO
  • Not a chance, he may raise it's profile butr it will never be as popular as NFL, NBA or Baseball. But to be honest, most of us in Europe aren't bothered if it oes become popular there, it's already the biggest team sport in the rest of the world!
  • if soccer were ever to be the number 1 sport in the US then you will be sure that it will have been influenced by the attention brought to MLS from the media about a player who gained experience from performances for Man United, Real, England and Galaxy.
  • No. We will still hate soccer. But we will know about him.
  • Not without the abolishment of the NFL and Nascar Though I still refuse to consider "Drive fast, turn left" a sport.
  • I believe David Beckham is a great soccer player. He is a great freekick kicker and it is so amazing. I wonder if David Beckham can really make United State's major sport to soccer. In my opinion, nothing is really impossible if humans try their best. But, I think it will be very hard for David Beckham to make Uniter'd states major sport to soccer. Since every countries culture and traditions are different so their thoughts will all be different. For one person to change a country's number one sport is really hard. People in that country have to agree on that sports and to unite all together to love that sport. So, my point is that David Becham may change some of the people who lives in United States. It is hardly unbelievable if David Beckham changes United State's top one to soccer. I guess the answer of this quetion depends on how one thinks in different perspectives. Anyways, I think he can't make "UNITED STATE'S" top one sport to soccer. Thank You! I am pleased to answer your question! :)
  • hahahahaha. wait, wait, I can't see, laughing to hard. 50 Beckhams couldn't make it #1 in the U.S. We want instant gratification. Watching an entire game with a score of one to zero isn't going to work.
  • Possibly the number 5 sport since Lacrosse does not have the slightest chance of coming close to soccer.
  • Maybe, but needed long time. http://vvipvideo.com/beckham
  • no his football carrer is over
  • Anyone, I repeat, anyone can play soccer. I did. It was fun. It's boring as hell to watch. That's the problem. Most of the world just hasn't caught on to how "boring" it actually is. Once they do, Rugby will catch on, then American Football, then Curling and Golf.
  • oh hell no! He has made the tabloids something to write about. Thanks to the women's national team, soccer is a climbing popular sport in the US.
