Slight revision: If governments took 95% of all assets owned by everyone and kept them, what would the world look like in a few years? Pretty much the same as it does now.

No governments would be extremely rich because 95% of what is given to the poor would be taken away and held in government coffers or Swiss Bank accounts belonging to despotic leaders!

if i had 5% of my assets left, i'd be "poor."

what kind of _____ system is that?

if i worked hard for my degree and worked hard to earn what i've earned, i won't have the government, or anyone, just snatch it up.

i will help in other ways. i won't be expected to force feed anyone. it will only make those who are unemployed more lazy because they will have no incentive to work.

This question reminds me of a joke that goes something like this: a kid writes & mails a letter to Santa Claus asking for a $100 to buy a new bike. The post office, not knowing what to do with it, delivers it to the White House. Bush reads the letter and decides to send the kid a $10 bill thinking that would be a lot to a small child. A month later, a letter comes in from the kid thanking Santa Claus for the $10 but explaining that he noticed that the IRS had got a hold of the money and deducted $90. Moral of the story is, that the government would the wealth from the rich, keep about 90% of it and distribute the remaining 10% to the poor. At the end, all but the politicians would be equally poor

Figure that the people would all rebel against the governments with wars, riots, civil unrest and we would go back to the Dark Ages. The world would be similar to the movie Mad Max.

Let's see, those who lost the assets would be trying to think of ways to get them back. Those who took will give themselves a healthy chunk and not distribute them evenly. One word. . .chaos!

A true expert already answered this question, Leon Trotsky after the Russian Revolution. "He who has goods to redistribute will surely not forget about himself." North Korea is as close to this "ideal" as you can get. One or two hundred thousand people starve to death every year but there is no pleasure or luxury the dictators haven't permitted themselves. Kim Jong Il pays more for a case of Scotch than I did for my last car. Come to think of it, he probably pays more for a BOTTLE of Scotch....

The world would not be different. However, if the people of the world did that voluntarily, contributing to a variety of domestic and international organizations with credibility, accountability, and local community leadership structures, the world would be a vastly different place. Governments do not do this well. Communities and various non-profits do it very well.

It would look like the Feudal state that the Republicans are so much in love with.
