I recall reading an interview of one of the Edsel vehicle engineers in a car magazine (Automobile?) a few years ago.
This engineer had worked for Mercedes-Benz prior to coming to Ford. He tried to convince the management to focus more on quality the way M-B did.
According to him, Ford had two kinds of parts for the Edsel --
1)Parts that were the cheapest Ford could obtain...those were used to build the cars
2) Parts that actually met Ford's specifications and quality standards...those were sent to dealers to use as replacement parts when the cars came in for repairs.
