Help answer this question below.
It's not the clutch. If it is jumping out of gear then the dogs on 2nd gear drive and 2nd gear wheel are rounded and worn. If it just hard to shift but does not jump out of gear then I would suggest checking the shift shaft. They bend very easily and will cause horrible problems shifting. If you have thrown a chain then most likely you have a bent shift shaft. You can remove it by taking off the clutch cover and removing the clutch assy. You will need a 28MM socket to remove the nut on the primary drive shaft, (clutch shaft). There are also shift cogs in the shift drum, you will want to check them fir wear as well. The shift shaft will pull through the center cases freely after you remove the clutch. A little note; when you remove the clutch hub nut you must first punch the lock washer the locks the nut flat or you will never get it lose. Also if the shaft is bent badly you may have to hammer it from the left side of the bike. There is also a shift shaft adjustment.
maybe the clutch needs adjusting, or maybe a bent shift fork.
hmmm, im no expert here , but have you tried adjusting the clutch ?

You're reading I have a yamaha yz 250f dirt bike. When I race it i can shift fine from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st but when i kick it into 3rd it gets really hard to shift up. I can usually shift down easily but it gets really hard to shift up. Please help?
