Mingle and meet LOTS of different kinds of people.
Then, select the nicest sharpest ones who really have their act together, to
make some really lasting, great friendships.

Anybody can study and learn, but the whole point of being
in college is to network with people,
make lots of good connections, and have a BLAST doing it.

"Have Fun, Good Luck, and we Love and are always here for you. Don't stress!"

By this time, you should have some faith in your son, and how you have raised him. I dont think it matters too much at this point what you tell him, short of a life-changing deep and meaningful lecture; Which would be pretty much impossible to give unless you have chosen to let your son raise himself.

Eitherway, Your son will probably do what he feels is right overall as a person, and thats bigger than anything you can say alongside a goodbye.

Well, this is what I wish someone had told me before I went to college:

    - Whatever else you do, do work hard on your studies. Every other idiot these days has a college degree, but not everyone has a good grade - and no matter how clever you are you won't get that without a lot of hard work. Don't kid yourself you can get away with skipping classes or trying to run off a 4000 word assignment the night before it's due, or pass an exam without revising. It won't work, no matter how much coffee you drink (!).

    - Get involved in something extra-curricular. Whether it's sport or drama or music run by the college, or some voluntary work or charity fundraising you find yourself- anything that sparks your interest. It'll help you meet people, give you a bit of a life outside of schoolwork, and will really impress future employers. However be wary of letting these activities take over too much (see first tip!)

    - Be careful with money right from the beginning. Work out a sensible weekly budget, stick it to your wall and stick to it. Learn to do without luxuries, eat cheaply (learn to cook from scratch if you have to cater for yourself - eating out or buying ready meals every day will take it's toll on your bank account as well as your health - one of the best presents a parent can give their college bound kids is a good budget cookbook, buy clothes secondhand, have house parties instead of going out, don't start smoking and consider doing without a car.

Other than that I think you just have to tell him you love him, and you're their on the end of a phoneline if there's any problem or he just needs to chat.
Also, before he goes, make sure he knows how to use a washing machine (that really did for me when I first had to do my own laundry!)

Try to focus on your schoolwork, figure out what you really want in life, don't do drugs, alcohol, and don't get in with the wrong crowd.
