Can they take you to jail for hiding a car from a repossessor?

    this is a cat and mouse game and is strictly civil in nature. no jail time here.

    Nope. As earlier answered, repossesions are a civil matter. Not to mention that the only person who can report their vehicle stolen, is the REGISTERED owner of the vehicle. (Not the lien-holder.)

    No....here is why. there are criminal laws and there are civil laws. repossession is civil. its a cat and mouse game with you hiding the car and the lender attempting to recover it. it happens more than you would believe. end

    I suspect that they could. Assuming the repossessor is acting under the terms of the finance agreement, you might be accused of stealing or attempting to steal it. The finance company will have gained possession of the car by a court order, so you might be in contempt of court.

    At least, that is the opinion of this non-attorney.
