Well if I put it something is mildly funny I am not actually laughing. I normally will mention that I actually laughed at that if I was laughing.
-
I normally use it if I think something is amusing or funny. Also, if I am writing an answer or comment, and I want people to know what I am saying is in good humor or fun( not to take it personally ) then I will add LOL too.
-
I have never used any of those shorthands. They seem too affected when I read them, and it would be too easy for me to abuse them. It might take a while for my expression to come across, but I prefer to do that with clear, concise, and exact wording, know what I mean string bean? lol (just getting the point across - first time for everything)
-
I do it out of habit :)
-
For me personally, YES. ... I so seldom actually laugh out loud, or roll on the floor, that I almost never use lol (lots of laughs), LOL (laugh out loud), or any of the others ... but I do use smileys and smirks and grins ... wink ;) __________ smiley :) __________ grin ...... °¿° ._. __________ smirk ...... °¿° .~ __________ shock |||||| °¿° .0 ... and so on ...

I don't put "lol" unless it at least got a real live chuckle. I most often use "heh" for the vague sense of amusement I get from people on the internet.
-
I never use "LOL" or the like. I do use smilies though. :)
-
If I put LMAO or ROTFLMAO, I'm probably laughing out loud. Otherwise, it's just acknowledging the potential laughter.
-
When I laugh out loud, I really mean it when I use those (LOL, etc.) http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/1040212 If I'm smiling, kidding or expressing similar emotions I use emoticons.
-
no useally i am really laughing out loud.
-
lol= I did laugh, although it might not have been very loud LOL= I laughed and it was moderately loud lmao= I laughed loud enough for my neighbors to hear me LMAO= I laughed loud enough for my neighbors to hear me and kept on laughing ROTFLMAO= I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face and it looks like I'm crying.

If I'm laughing, you'll know it. "I mentioned used cars earlier, right? What do they call 'em now? Pre-owned, that's right. People always soften words these days. It's not used, it's pre-owned. It's not a war, it's a military conflict. I'm not a pedophile, I'm a talent scout." <--(joke from a Last Comic Standing audition) "....OH MY GOD THAT IS SO BAD!!! XDDDD OMFG YES HAHAHAAAA!!!" and usually that will continue on for at least another thirty seconds before I compose myself. I like to give credit where credit is due when someone makes a funny, so I reflect how "loud" (caps and !) and incoherent my RL laughing spell was with the way I type. That example kinda sucked since I wasn't at a computer when I heard that joke and I wasn't IMing the comic who said it and therefore could not express my lulz like such, but I just like that joke. :3 If something is mildly funny, I'll use a face or go "Ha~".

Sometimes, when writing "lol," I AM laughing out loud and other times I simply find it amusing. As for the other question, it makes sense in a sense, so I suppose you're atleast halfway right.
-
I often put a :-) if I am only trying to indicate that I am saying something in a lighthearted way. LOL is generally an indication that I am quite amused. And yes, there are stages of "funny".
-
When i put a 'lol' it is becuase i am genuinely laughing out loud, and yes lmao is a level up from lol and pmsl is really when i cant stop chuckling so i am being genuine when i put these in my answers :)
-
