it depends on the amount of oxygen present. Steel rusts when the atoms in it slowly react together to form an oxide (rust). Other things can contribute to the time, ie) presure, temp ect xx

As a machining student, I learned that rust can form on naked steel in a matter of days, about ten if I remember correctly.

this is a question that need a lot of informations to anwers. The corrosion of steel is a function of: -environemnts exposure: air, water, seawater... -if it's water what is the amount of oxygen, the chemical analysis of the water, bicarbonate content, fluid velocity.. -if it's an atmospheric exposure it depends if it's a marine or industrial atmosphere, humidity ... -temperature -conditions of the surface of the steel so give you an answers is not so easy.. if you can give some other data maybe is possible to give you an answer.. http://www.corrosionist.com/how_does_rust_form.htm S
