Automative components like the starter motor, are typically designed to last for about 7 or 8 years of service. However, their life may be reduced if they have been abused or subjected to abnormal operating conditions. The life expectancy of any manufactured item is estimated from sample populations (MTBF: mean time between failures), which have a range of values. If your starter has failed after 4 years, you probably have one that fell on the low side of the population curve. This is quite normal.

1991 auto vw jetta wants to stall, but once she is running it will be ok for about 1/2 hr, stalls, then it is really hard to start again
