If you don't pay the bill for repairs they have done, then yes.

In the UK the lien does not entitle the mechanic to sell the vehicle. The mechanic merely has a legal right to keep it until payment is made - see http://www.gillhams.com/dictionary/19.cfm

A mechanics lien, is law in just about all the states. if the repair bill is not paid, the mechanic or owner, can apply to the court for a lien on the automobile. after notice is given to the owner, there are so many days the owner has, to respond. if, after this amount of time, the owner of the vehicle does not respond or pay the bill, the mechanic or shop owner can again apply to the court for ownership. this happens all the time and is perfectly legal.

What the mechanic or shop owner does with the vehicle, is his choice by court order.
