First, a good owner should never let a thick coating of brake dust form, but I know it can happen from time to time like on roadtrips.

I personally use two different alloy wheel cleaners.
    1) Eagle One Wheel & Tire cleaner - $11 per bottle
    2) Black Magic alloy wheel cleaner - $10.99 per bottle

The advantage to the eagle one product is that you can clean both the wheels and tires. Get an old fairly stiff brush (you should be able to run your hand through it without any pain or scratching), coat the entire wheel and tire in the stuff, let it soak for about 10 seconds and start scrubbing with the brush. Hose off everything after 40 seconds (even if you're not done scrubbing). Repeat as necessary. Also, remember to scrub the tire sidewall as well.

A little tip you can use if you find a lot of brake dust often is to wax the wheels with non-abrasive hard shell car wax. Turtle wax works well. Do it when they are very clean and cool. Apply as usual. This will make it harder for the brake dust to damage the wheel.

    Hope this helps,
    Good luck
