Help answer this question below.
I helped write Google Earth. Google Earth simply renders using a different graphics API with each option, but in essence the same hardware is used. Each should look the same or very similar, the main reason for providing both is to ensure better support accross a range of platforms if you see problems with one try the other. My preference is for OpenGL and it was initially written in OpenGL, but ensuring each renders correctly is a priority of Google and this is really about driver quality on YOUR graphics card.
Where should I make a "report" of a strange photo in Google Earth? I want to know if it really is strange or just a common anomaly.

You're reading Whats the difference between opengl mode and directx mode on google earth? which one is better?
Comments
Ok but when I type in Google Earth in the Windows search box (I have Windows 7 with an Acer Aspire 5517 laptop)I get Google Earth in two lines, one says "open Google Earth in directx mode" and the other says "open Google Earth in openGL". My question is this: am I correct in assuming that since this option does not appear anywhere else in the course of installing Google Earth that the optimal option has been automatically chosen for me? Also, should I leave it alone as long as nothing appears to be wrong or should I actually do a comparison of some sort?
