Well, Metho is just Ethanol with a tiny impurity of a similar compound that tastes very bad (it is added as the "Denaturing" process, so homeless people dont drink it as cheap booze, and poison themselves with too much alcohol). Metho evaporates without a trace, and is clear and colourless. The white marks must be from the cloth, or from the slate. I suspect its the cloth, but you may have wiped off somethign fromt he surface of the slate, and exposed something white underneath (Doubtfull, if its real slate, which I assume i is) If its the cloth, try using a cotton rag with some water (+ some elbow grease!), to see if it removes the marks, if it doesnt, try the cotton cloth with a little bit of metho, on a corner of the marks, to see if it makes it worse, or removes the white marks.

The metho may have partially dissolved the sealant used on your slate and the white marks could be what's left of the adulterated coating. If this is the case, you may have to get the slate recoated (I hope not). Speak to the manufacturer of the sealant and ask them. Alternatively, try neutral shoe polish (you are after the wax content) as a temporary sealant to keep your slate protected. As for the previous comment about methanol evaporating without a trace, I'm not sure that is true as there is an evil taste left on the fingers when metho is handled and evaporated. I would like to know what that is composed of which is why I originally came to this page to start with. Any takers???
