Here's my "seems like the most obvious thing" guess: The crankshaft position sensor. The CPS tells the engine control computer how fast the engine is spinning and where in its 360 degree rotation the crankshaft is. The computer then bases the operation of the fuel injectors and the firing of the spark plugs on this input. If the CPS has failed, the computer can't accurately operate the fuel and spark systems. That would also explain why your tachometer is malfunctioning. A quick check of an online auto parts site indicates the sensor costs about $25. Good luck.
