Adam and Eve were created to have the freedom to choose. Before their disobedience to God's commandment not to eat of the fruit, they were both innocent and sin free. But they sinned by willful disobedience.

God created the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and He forbid them to eat from it, obviously as a constant test of their loyalty to obedience to Him. They had access to everything in the garden of Eden, but God reserved that one tree for Himself and made it off limits.

It has been suggested that perhaps in time, with spiritual maturity, Adam and Eve may have grown to the depth where God could have allowed them to eat of that fruit, where they could have handled the opening of their "eyes". That is merely suggested opinion, but who knows. God usually withholds things from us for our own good.

Why did they eat of it? Because Eve allowed the serpent to deceive her into thinking its personal benefit was greater than her need to be loyal to God's commandment. Sound like our world today?

Adam was right there with her at the time. He could have said something to stop her, but he didn't, so he was just as much to blame.

And in all honesty, if they hadn't eaten of the fruit, by the time I came along, I very well might have. In other words, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone but myself, but I'm also grateful for the cross of Jesus Christ.

There were two versions of Torah, the J-text and the P-text, merged together long ago. The J-text said that YHVH was a little-boy god. Hence he's surprised when his creation goes all wrong and he finally decides to drown it; he doesn't know at first that a man needs a woman therefore when Adam is lonely the first thing he does is make animals so Adam can have a pet; and so on. The P-text says that YHVH is all-knowing and all-powerful. The merging of the texts resulted in an all-powerful god with a childish personality -- a terrifying thing indeed.

Yes man was meant to live sin free even from the day of Adam and eve. And from the day when Adam and eve eat of the tree of knowledge god has tried to bring man back into his grace. The purpose of the tree was to give man a choice god even from then has wanted man to love him from choice he never intended for use to only live for him because there was no choice this started from even the creation of man with free will. God wants those who do believe in him to do so with the knowledge that they have a choice. This is one of the things that distinguishes god from Satan men are servants of Satan with out even knowing it and this was never the intention of god.

The Bible indicates that Adam and Eve were indeed created sin-free with the intent that they live sin-free.

I have heard it proposed that there was nothing significant about the Tree of Knowledge itself or its fruit - the significance was in the choice to obey or disobey. I find this a reasonable proposition: if there were no rules at all, how would man show submission to or rebellion against the Creator? The possibility exists that one rule was specified only as a means for man to demonstrate love and devotion for or rebellion against God. The rule could have been "don't swim in the Tigris, just the Euphrates" (or anything else) with the same effect.

There are other reasonable interpretations, but I think this one fits all the evidence adequately.

Obedience is a key thing in any religion, Adam and Eve also had laws to obey.

Life has a purpose and I am sure God being Infinite knew what he was doing.

Yes, Adam and Eve were created free of sin, and with the potential to remain free of sin. You may find it interesting to know that in the story of the Garden, the word sin is never actually used. Genesis 3:1-24

They were asked to follow the instructions they were given by God, and of their own free will to choose to be obedient to those instructions.

Had they not been provided with an opportunity to exercise their free will and to choose on their own to obey, they would hardly have had free will at all. They would have been much more like robots.

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is what allowed them to exercise their free will by providing them with an option.

The other interesting thing about the story of the Garden of Eden is that it does not state that they were exiled because of the act of eating of the fruit and disobeying God. For that they received various consequences (Genesis 3:16-21).

It says they were exiled from the Garden as a preventative measure, in order to prevent them from eating the fruit of a second tree, which previously would have been available to them, The Tree of Life. The tree of life would have given them immortality, and it was to prevent this once they had broken fellowship with God, that they were exiled.

Genesis 3:22,23 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

Is it freeing to admit complete defeat to God, To believe He can restore us to sanity,
asking to do His will and then searching our hearts for all the wounds that show up in our deeds?

    what am I looking at?

For every bad fruit do i look for without blaming the enemy my part in which I have been selfish, dishonest, self seeking and frightened?

Do I treat others as they were fallible sinners who are "sick" and imperpect?

Do I give my fears to thje Lord?

Is my motto "Do not harm?"

Do I admit my faults and search self daily for wrongs that need correcting?

It is an ancient and widespread oral story, and this is not the only version.

Another version states that the two trees are the Tree of Life and the Tree of Death. The Creator sends the snake to tell the couple which is which, but the crafty snake switches the instructions so he can have the fruit of the Tree of Life for himself. This explains why humans die but snakes live forever.

Good question. I don't know why. I am still asking something similiar myself. Questions about the "free will" part. If he didn't give us free will and we just did whatever he wanted us to we wouldn't know the difference! So, why did he give us free will? If it is because he loves us enough to give us a choice then in the same way he had a choice of creating us the perfect way he wants us and the feeling of "I am a robot" he could create us to not feel that and where we are all happy and content as heaven is described to be! I read that GOD created good and evil. Why did he create evil? Someone on here said that evil was always here from the beginning. If that be the case then why doesn't GOD "Delete it" sort of speak? Why drag it out and put all his creations through hell on earth just to eventually end evil and sin as the Bible states will happen in the end? I believe in GOD. I believe in Jesus. I am a born again Christian. I don't ask this in disbelief, but that I understand where all these questions come from. I understand the feeling of wanting to know why. Yet, I do believe that I and (every human being) needs Jesus and his holy spirit. I hope to have insight on this knowledge someday, but whether I do or don't obtain that info in heaven I still believe it is all true in the Bible perhaps misinterpited over the times, but the basic message is kept.

God wanted us to have an experience to live on earth and learn to make good choices. In this state, Adam and Eve couldn't do good or wickedness and they couldn't have children (see 2 Nephi 2:23 in the Book of Mormon ~ http://scriptures.lds.org/en/2_ne/2/23#23 is a quick link). Thus the fruit of this tree was the key to playing out God's plan for us. The disobedience to God's commandment caused Adam and Eve to fall but it was a fall forward.

"Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have joy." -2 Nephi 2:25 in the Book of Mormon

Adam and Eve were created in the image of God. They were created without sin. Sin is anything that separates you from God. God gave them everything that they needed to live long and happy lives in direct fellowship with Him in a paradise here on earth. He told them to eat from every tree except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It was a test for them. It was a way for them to show that they believed that God had their best interests at heart and that He was their Sovereign Lord. What they did by eating that fruit was to call God a liar and in effect say that He was not their lord nor did He have their best interest at heart.

short, but may reveal a lot... maybe God created the tree of knowledge to TEST Eve and Adam...

hmm..i think yes.. they were created to be sin-free.. like the others said.. the tree of knowledge is a test..that God forbids them to eat of the fruit.. its because.. God wanted to know if we were to obey Him and to test our loyalty to Him..and so He made us the ability to choose.. eventhough He knows the outcome.. God wanted us to feel His love thats why. He sacrificially sacrificed His ONLY BEGOTTEN SON to die on the cross.. to forgive our sins..

I'm sorry but none of the previous answers make any sense.

First off, it's not Adam's fault that he transgressed God's word because since he hadn't yet eaten from the tree, he didn't know any better!!

Secondly, SIN DID NOT YET EXIST, if sin already existed, then would have been God's fault that sin and evil are in the world, and he is NOT.

The correct and biblically supported answer is that Satan was responsible for the first sin on earth. He knew better and lied to Eve to get her to eat the fruit (Gen 3:4). We also know he is responsible because God Himself punishes him for it (Gen 3:14).

It's as clear as day, I hope this clears up any confusion.
