    It helps to periodically move otherwise arbitrary national borders across the terrain. It's good for giving some relatively few commanders their place in history, keeps the world interesting enough and on guard enough to vote in order to avoid it. It helps use up obsolete systems to make way for the new, this stimulates the economy, while reducing the numbers of those who might share in the increase, thus serving to better enrich those who remain. War gives poor people jobs, people who have skills which can best be described as aggressive in nature. War, from time to time refreshes the tree of liberty with the blood of tyrants and of patriots. War gives otherwise broken down old men something important to reminisce on. In short, war is good. It keeps the world balanced

    is helps decrease the population of the world. face it, if 200,000 ppl die in war. thats 200,000 less ppl to worry about. war also can provide milllions of jobs. plus, some ppl are a alive just becuz its illegal to kill them. and as u alla re getting mad at me for stating the facts, think about this. There's a very interesting theory in Sociology and Anthropology that War is a natural part of the Human evolutionary process. The most aggressive and powerful civilizations almost always tend to be those with large populations and a need to expand; perhaps war is, in part, nature's way of 'culling the excess population'.

    Interesting thought, don't you agree?

    It's a inhibiting process, while many (including myself) believe that war is wrong, considering the planet can only support an estimated 9-12 billion humans, and we're getting pretty close to that point, war starts to make since ;).

    War is good for the economy. Money is earned by selling other countries weapons and after the war money is made by the rebuilding of the countries that were defeated. It brought us out of the Depression in the thirties.

    War is only good for revolutions. When a people are oppressed then they have the right to wage war on their oppressors to gain their freedom. Wars of aggression are not good for anything and they are motivated by avarice, which is evil.

    Unfortunately, war is often the only way to remove a tyrannical government from power. Tyrants don't care about the niceties of civilized debate. All they care about is gabbing and holding onto as much power as they can get. To further this end, they build up armies, oppress their own people, and menace/conquer their neighbors. The only way to stop such people is to forcibly remove them from power. Unfortunately, that usually means having to go through their armies which means war. If no one was willing to stand up to such tyrants, then they would run rough shod over the rest of us.

    ***************
    "Alatea: Wow, sounds like Bush and he is a tyrant, quite uncivilized and murders innocents all over the world."

    If you want to know what it is like to live under a tyrant, maybe you should try moving to Iran. See how long they put up with you. Maybe then you would understand what a really tyranny is like.

    ***************
    iwnit1, the government of Iran is dominated by a single religion which has total control. So, they they pretty much have a one party system of government. When there is only one party, the people don't have a choice in government. So, while they put on the airs of a republic, Iran is no more free than the Soviet Union was. The government is still tyrannical. It still oppresses those that dare to disagree with it. A number of the people who have criticized me for this answer have also been those that have stood up for the right of people to be promiscuous. Try behaving in that way in Iran. See how long it takes the government to sentence you to death by stoning. This is not propaganda. This is life under an extremist Islamic government. You want to complain about President Bush, but he will be out of office in less than two years. Meanwhile the same people will probably still be in power in Iran and they will still be bent on spreading their hateful ideology to the rest of the world.

    First response: War, {huh}, good golly y'all, what is it good for, absolutely nothing! (you have to sing this)

    Serious response: there are few truly necessary wars, but they can happen. Catholics have a pretty clear definition of when that is: we call it the Just War doctrine.

    The strict conditions for legitimate defense by military force require rigorous consideration. The gravity of such a decision makes it subject to rigorous conditions of moral legitimacy. At one and the same time:

    1. the damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain;
    2. all other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;
    3. there must be serious prospects of success;
    4. the use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated. The power of modern means of destruction weighs very heavily in evaluating this condition.

    These are the traditional elements enumerated in what is called the "just war" doctrine.

    War is not what the idiots on here think it is for. It is for population control, because if there were no wars then we would still have billions of tribes/countries today. War stimulates the economy, it employs people, it stops global depression, 'unites' population of people. Because the United States or any other country like germany or italy wouldn't exist if we didn't unite the people together by telling them that the people they serve are filth. And heck, we wouldn't have the joy of knowing the idiots and the bright tacticians who shape our world. And if there wasn't war, then try telling the creators of the bible to make it more action packed with people killing people with donkey jawbones, or having Jesus killed on the cross. Also for the gamers, no Call of Duty or any sort of war games you love. Plus, we also wouldn't go WTH when Hitler is dead, because he would've died with jews at his side.

    (Sung to the tune of MORE)

    War, helps to keep the population down
    War, means less people in a crowded town
    War, lets us try out new artillery
    War, gives our soldier's foreign trips for free

    War, gives our TV newscasts more
    scenes of blood and death and gore
    that's what living color's for......

    War is in some ways bad yes. But war can help a countries economy because when a country goes to war it needs to buy its supplies from a foreign nation because its supplies are already directed to war. Without war Hitler would probably have finished what he started by persecuting the Jews and would have been in control of most of the world if not all. Also without war the hit on the Twin Towers in New York would not have been much of a surprise probably because it would occur way more often but since war exists in a good form we were able to stop Hitler and the United States and its allies are doing what they can to end terrorism.

    War has its up and down moments and in my opinion the up's are better than the downs. Countries need war its what makes the world go round. But before you say that how dark and violent it is with the killing and death. Picture what the world would truly be before you say something else. You might see it as all flowers and roses but think how it would truly be. With out war who would stop people from raising an army and causing world domination. In-fact without war Hitler would rule the world or me might still be British and be paying very harsh taxes. But also think about safety would you be safe. The answer is no you wouldn't, there would mass kayos around you. You could walk out your house and get shot out of no where cause of war. Also to prove my point people think that all governments do is just war war war. But its not America tries there best to fix the problem without war, but sometimes war is called for. Just think with out the Iraq war there would pretty much be another ten 911's. And they could with out war so don't blame every president that chose to go to war blame your selfs for not supporting your country in some hard times for families who lost people to keep your country safe and did there job.

    War is good for peace...eventually.

    Isn't it? Germany is a democracy now. So is Japan.

    In Rwanda, there was a tribal war, which wasn't solved so now they have war criminals on trial but nobody is satisfied.

    War freed the americans from the British, then civil war was won by the North. They haven't fought since they became a democracy.

    War by proxy is complicated since the losers aren't the real bad guys. If Lebanon falls, Syria and Iran don't suffer. If the antagonist doesn't see defeat, there's no change and they prepare for the next round.

    Iraq and Afghanistan, well democracies are there to kick the bad guys, right? We're training police forces, training locals who will some day be the local governments. When time goes by, elections will be won or lost and then we'll see if the population wants the right to vote. If they don't, then we've failed. It's not up to us to determine their futur, just take down the thugs in power. That's not selfish.

    If you do think we're selfish, that we only fight for oil and plunder their resources, think again. The Iraqis never had any oil, Saddam did. That pipeline in Afghanistan, it's bringing money into the country. Who benefits from that? Western powers aren't just selfish, you're missing a big part of the picture if you think so. Building schools and roads and training the locals wouldn't happen if we were selfish.

    What is war good for? I think sometimes it's not greed so much as helping those who can't help themselves. Look at Germany with Hitler, look at the Iraq with Saddam Hussein. Outside help could have helped the Russians in 1918 when they took down the Tzar. Look who took over: The next big power who used the revolution and the people for it's own needs! It wasn't a democracy.

    Democracies don't fight each other, and that is the best thing I can see concerning wars. It doesn't take away the hate, or the wars of words, but at least democracies don't fight each other.

    And that's something.

    Does that make sense?
