You may need to do something to reset the light. It should tell you in the owner's manual.
The "Check Engine" light indicates that the engine control computer has detected a fault somewhere in the emissions control system of the vehicle.
The number of causes for this is quite extensive. You need to have the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer that can give more information about the problem (commonly called "reading a code").

The taillights on my 1993 Toyota Tercel stopped working, all other lights are fine. Tried the fuse and it shorts when inserted....Do you think it is the switch? The headlights are fine- Thanks.
