  • I learned this only recently myself, when my son took a liking to the classical style guitar. The primary difference--there could be other minor differences--is that the classical guitar has a slightly wider neck to accomodate slightly wider string spacing. This string spacing facilitates the classical style of play, with thumb and fingers, no pick.
  • Another difference is that the fretboards on classical guitars almost always meet the body at the 12th fret, allowing for a convenient three octave spread; the open 6th string (E) up to the 12th fret, 1st string (E, three octaves above). "Regular" acoustics often have fretboards that meet the body at the 15th fret.
  • Jalex's answers are right, but it's also important to note that classical guitars have nylon strings (historically they were made with sheep guts). acoustic guitars have steel strings. Don't ever try to put steel strings on a classical guitar either, because you'll break the guitar.
  • Classical guitars are smaller and usually have nylon strings whereas acoustics are larger and have steel strings.
  • A couple more differences: A classical guitar's fretboard is typically flat--it does not have a radius. The tuning pegs on a classical guitar all point the same way: away from the front of the guitar. A "traditional" acoustic guitar has tuning pegs that point out to the sides. This difference is the quickest and easiest way to tell the difference from a distance. A classical guitar usually lacks a pick guard, since flat picks are not used to play it.
  • classical or or spanish guitars have nylon strings - regular acoustics have steel strings. Classical guitars have a wider neck and a higher action. Also the bridge on the classical guitar is a lot different than the one on regukar acoustics as well as the headstock wich has the tunning pegs facing towards the bottom of the guitarand alsdo has two holes along the entire headstock with 6 cilindrical pieces where the strings are atached. Another major difference is that the neck on the classical guitar is atached to the body on the 12th fret and tends to have less frets than regular acoustics. hope this helps :)
