John vonHartmann's answer is a good one. However, there is another factor involved here. "Mandatory evacuations" are not really mandatory. Officials can't come to your home and force you to leave. When the government issues a mandatory evacuation, what they are really saying is that you "should get out of the area. If you choose to stay than you do so at your own risk. If you get into trouble because you stayed, then don't expect us to come and bail you out because we are not so stupid as to stay in the path of a natural disaster." So, the weather people stay knowing that they are doing so at their own risk and as John stated, they will usually set up someplace where they can reasonably protect themselves rather than facing the full fury of what is coming.

The weather people in our area actually have a fortified part of the building that is completely self contained. While other stations went off the air due to the storms Ivan, Frances, and Jeanne, they were still transmitting 24 hours a day. There wasn't much left of the area around them, but they were all safe. As with any catastrophe, man made or acts of God, it takes planning. These people were the only ones that had done any planning. www.wftv.com
