Help answer this question below.
I think what attracts some people to particular books and not others is relevance. If i read a book about a topic that intrests me, or strikes a chord with my hopes and dreams, or if I see that a certain character is like myself in some way, I am going to be attracted in that book. And of course all people are different, so different people are going to find relevance in different books.
I have no answer, however I most certainly wish to acknowledge such an awesome question. :)
Their interests
I would suppose that they read things that they are interested in, of course.
First, congratulations on getting this question as the topic of the day! Nice job!
What attracts me to books? Several things:
1. Sometimes I have heard of a new book coming out that is interesting.
2. Sometimes I need books for reference.
3. Sometimes I just browse and a cover will attract my attention with it's picture, title, or subject.
4. Sometimes I'm shopping for a gift for someone who likes to read, so I'll go to the kinds of books they like.
5. Sometimes I buy books on the subjects I like.
it could be that they like the cover and TRY reading it. or, the back or inside cover(s) might interest them. then, there's the genre or author if they've read another book from them and like their books.

Subject matter, the author, face color of the book, and display are very good attractions. also, being tuned-in to a specific author. meaning, an author that approaches life and its ideas, the same as yours. many authors books are easier to read and comprehend, than others. this is also an attraction. the key is being able to relate to people and having a positive response.
Naughty pictures.
Particular subject matter.
This is an excellent question. There are a few factors that influence book selection. Here are a few:
1. How well the reader relates to a particular character. For instance, an orphaned girl might see facets of herself in Anne of Green Gables. Sometimes, the reader can draw from the character's struggles to help her cope with her own problems. There's a whole form of counseling, called bibliotherapy, based on this idea.
2. Is the book centered around a topic that interests the reader? I.e. Egyptology or crime scene investigation.
Particular covers?
It all depends on what their interest are. Some like sci-fi, some like romance, others like biographies. Everyone is different.

This is a cool question. I really don't know, but I'm pretty sure you could psychoanalyze a person based on what books they read.
