The Red Sox came so close without winning many times, having been in the World Series in 1986, 1975, 1967 and 1946. Those World Series losses were all on the national stage and featured players like Ted Williams, Roger Clemens, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Wade Boggs, Pedro Martinez, Jim Rice, Fred Lynn. Sometimes their lineups were so powerful, their pitching so superior it seemed impossible for them to lose... BUT there was the CURSE. I think it was the curse that has made the Red Sox so popular. When the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, the Red Sox were doomed. This superstition captured the fancy of baseball fans from coast to coast. Today's Red Sox are popular because of their players, their young vibrant owner and the fact that they can beat the Yankees. The ACLS in 2004, in which the Red Sox came back miraculously from a 3-0 game deficit to those Yankees, endeared them to Yankee haters. Besides, it was the most thrilling post season series imaginable.

Boston's a prominent team, as any team that has been around that long is....but I don't see them as the upper echelon of popularity. If anything, their prominence is just as the constant whipping boys to the Yankees (a team which I despise, btw), until recently. The Yankees, obviously. Also, the Braves kind of won a national following since they were prominent in the early days of Cable TV. Go Tigers.

The Red Sox have a rich history in baseball. They have very dedicated fans whose loyalty is passed generation to generation. That coupled with the fact that many people from the north east transplant themselves around the country.

I'm from L.A. and am a HUGE Sox fan. The first time I came to Boston I absolutely loved it! I went to a Sox game at Fenway and t was a life changing experience. The dedication to the team from the fans is absolutely unmatched here in L.A. where there are two teams to choose from for your liking. I just love the feeling of being a part of the Nation.
