Question

Help answer this question below.

The scientific consensus on Global Warming has only grown in the past five years. Why is there still so much scepticism regarding it? Have conservative public relations efforts been that effective? Or do people just naturally believe the safer option?

Nearly all of the scientific community now recognizes that this phenomenon is happening..the statistics continue to prove it. The public has been mislead by the governments (who don't want to participate in things like the Kyoto accord) and big businesses who don't want to comply with regulatory emission standards. The people are confused.

The science is relatively easy to understand, easy to find and easily indicates that this is not like any previous climate shift the Earth has experienced before. The levels of gases, in the ice cores alone, show that this global change in temperature is directly affected by man, and certainly made more immediate and severe by us.
The evidence is there. But you have to want to know the real answer before you will look for it. It seems that many people don't want to know. It scares them.
What scares me is the idea of wars over water and food production slowing or stopping. Many will die. We probably can't stop this, but we certainly have the power to slow it down and give us more time to adjust and find solutions to the problems that will come with this new age.

I think it's easier to stick your head in the sand and hope that someone else will do something about it, or that it will just go away. Denying the existence of global warming means not having to think about the solution, and not having to change the way you live today. Change is always resisted at first, but hopefully people will come around in time to do something about the situation!

People just want to take the easy option and preserve the status quo.

Actually there is very recently a great deal of data that debunks the theory that mankind is a major cause of the shifts in the environment, that those shifts are not as severe as once thought, and that the alarmists are way off base. There is hardly a concensus amongst credible scientists. To come up with the list of 2500 so widely promoted by the U.N. they had to include helpers, techs, assistants and many others who do not even have a degree in anything. The Global Warming Hoax has become a political movement more than an ecology movement and people are using it to promote their agenda.

I don't consider myself highly educated on the topic but I will throw my two cents in any way. From what I have studied it seems that there is indeed some global warming, but many scientists want to be able to blame things on global warming instead of also considering climate shifts. There is evidence for both, but I am still skeptical on how much of it is true global warming and how much is part of what could be a climate shift.

Because people believe what they read in the popular press and don't understand science or scientific method. A common complaint is "you can't predict the weather next week so how can you predict climate change?!?!" which is making the cardinal mistake that because you can't predict the behaviour of a small sample space then you can't model and predict larger patterns created by these seemingly random events. Kinetic theory of gasses is a prime example of where this situation certainly exists. People also like to mention that the scientific consensus could be wrong and this happens all the time in science. This is simply not true; it does occasionally happen but very rarely. Mavericks are rarely correct. Science advances by "standing on the shoulders of giants" not by knocking them over!

Terminology is important as well. There is certainly global warming (it is not a case of "It is the Sun STUPID!" - if that were the case why is the moon so much colder than the Earth despite being equidistant from the Sun?) but the question is is it man-made climate-change? Do our activities substantially affect climate patterns? The scientific community, to a vast majority, agree that this is the case.

Also people don't trust science. People instinctively distrust what they don't understand.

Finally people are worried about the political implications. Humans are naturally conservative and hate change, so to have a (well evidenced) scientific theory that says "your actions have reactions and consequences" is deeply disturbing to them.

Global warming is a myth, the earth has always warmed up and cooled down and warmed again and so on for millenia

No one has touched on the real reason. Most people do not look at the "long run" and therefore simply do not care.

Of those of us who do, we can easily see that as long as the population of the earth continues to increase at the current rate, nothing else we do will have any effect.

To my way of thinking, we should spend our time preparing for the impending disaster, rather than the futile task of trying to change human behavior. Changing light bulbs is akin to using a thimble to try to save a sinking boat.

I believe that people are just in denial. The evidence is overwhelming while the cause is mostly theory. I think that's the hangup with most people. No one has been able to prove HOW!

Scientists have studied the effects of global warming and repeatedly said that mankind and it's wastefulness have greatly affected the acceleration to global warming. The finding are mostly swept under the rug by the media. The major corporations that pollute and greatly contribute to this do not want negative media, and since they have the money they are able to silence the information.Since the world media presents the information one must look deeper into the internet to see the reality of global warming.
