A craton is the stable igneous or metamorphic core of a continental mass. This rocks of this core are are at least 500 million years old, but can be over 2 billion years in age. This portion of the continents experiences very little earthquake or volcanic activity. The craton is divided into two parts. The shield is the portion of the craton that is actually exposed at the surface. The platform is the portion of the craton that is covered by sedimentary rocks. So, the shield is a sub part of the craton.
