  • Interesting question. There is an old article in Discover magazine about a man who designs buildings using WATER, encased in plastic sheathes. Believe it or not, this is the strongest possible building material relative to things like earthquakes. To get more ideas, consult the Whole Earth Catalog.
  • Wood is, in fact, the best combination of cheapness and strength. That's why most homes are built of wood. See my answer to this other question: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/33436
  • Wood offers the best combination of both. IF cost were no issue, I think Titanium framing would be good. I know that is an incredibly lightweight metal.
  • I would use clay bricks for they have been proven through history to last hundreds of years.
  • I don't know about a single material, but after Hurricane Andrew, FEMA publsihed a report stating that modular building were the strongest structures in hurricane zones and I think most modern modular houses are made of wood. I am having a steel building built for a commercial business though because it is cheaper and faster than any stick-built or modular structure made of wood.
  • Recycled empty glass bottles envelepped by light insutating concrete The loadbearing capacacity of the house walls is thus obtained Glass bottles can be found . The void of the bottles is a free insulating material. I advise to stop thinking traditionally (except wood)and to look in the area of thrown away materials that are potentially a possible alternative Anyone wishing to continue this discussion may join me at pietrodiienzo@yahoo.com
  • Ice blocks.
  • call me crazy but strawbale construction is cheap and is one, if not the best insulated houses you can build. you can build them free standing(by themselfs,) or with a frame, (then put the strawbales between the franming.) after the building is constructed use cob, concrete,or plaster to coat the outter and inner walls to protect from the elements. Check it out... http://www.greenhomebuilding.com/strawbale.htm Plus its eco friendly..
