I think that's part of the fright of the whole situation... constant burning, without being able to see... God created light, thus, he can take it away if he likes. If God wants the fires of hell to be dark, they're dark. Laws of earth science do not apply to deities.

Perhaps one (the darkness) is spiritual and the other (fire and brimstone) physical. I haven't checked the passages as I don't know where they are so my answer may not be appropriate.

It depends upon which word is being translated "hell." "Gehenna" is usually used for fire and is correctly translated "hell." "hades" or "Sheol" is incorrectly translated, "hell" and denotes a place of darkness.

You can be in the direct rays of the sun and still be in darkness if you are not bathed in the light of the Lord.
