It means that you are free to use it for signing checks or official documents. You may also use it on any important identification cards you may have like a drivers license, passport etc... Oh yes ! how could I forget people will call you Anna and on letter/mail you receive it may say Mrs Dalmaterra on the envelope.

It is almost certainly Spanish or Italian in origin. It would have been D'Almaterra, Almaterra being the name of a village or town. Alma- soul terra-land in Italian, but the name could be a corruption of something else. In Spain, names that started with Al- were often Arabic in origin. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. The best way to find out where your ancestors are from is to trace them backwards generation by generation, until you find your immigrant ancestor.
