  • Short answer, yes it's normal. Some doggies have little quirks like over wax or skin problems or hip problems do to all the inbreeding and etc. they've gone through to get their purebred status. I would recommend weekly ear cleanings with a product called Epiodic. You can get it at any vet clinic. There's also a 1, 2, and 3 cleaner that some vets recommend but at my clinic I find it's really more a of pain than the Epiodic, and the results are the same. To use the epiotic just squirt a little into your dog's ear and work the ear a little bit, then with some gauze , paper towel (a soft one), or Q-Tip wipe the inside of the ear until clean. The canine ear makes a sort of "L" shape, in that it goes down and then over. When cleaning you only want to go as deep as it goes down, don't push your finger or Q-Tip past the bend or you could injure your pet. If it seems like things need to be cleaned deeper, let your vet handle that. Long answer however is any abnormalities such as excessive wax production you should have checked out by your vet. Go ahead a give your dog's ear a good whiff, and if it smells bad then definitely take him in because that means he's got another problem. Hard to say definitively if it's normal because I obviously can't examen your puppy, but I would recommend having him checked out just in case. It shouldn't cost more than an office visit (around $30 - $40 at most clinics, $50-$60 at ritzy vets whom think too highly of themselves) and the cost of possibly some meds or some ear cleaner ($10-$20). Hope that helps! Sorry if I got long winded.
