  • I have a grandmother that doesn't speak English. It was hard when I was young but we always managed to communicate somehow. As I got older I learned Hebrew and we became much closer. Now she has severe Alzhiemers so I am very greatful that I made the effort to learn Hebrew.
  • My husband's father is Italian speaking and his mother is German, but both are bilingual English speakers too. At home, we speak both Italian and English. I always feel sorry for those who cannot communicate with their grandparents. I have seen it many times in the Italian-Austalian community. My children became surrogate grandchildren for some oldies because they could speak Italian.
  • Yes, My grandparents only speak Spanish. It doesn't bother me, I speak it too, but throughout the years I've "lost" a lot of it. It can be very irritating when you just can't think of the right word! They can understand me in English every now and then for those stubborn words that creep up on you.
