  • The answer is: Sometimes. It depends on 1) what you're petitioning for 2) to whom you are petitioning and 3) what format of petition you are using. A petition is a show of public support, however it needs to be a reasonable request. For example: Commencement of public transportation is a reasonable request because transportation is vital to the growth and prosperity of a community. Pulling all US troops out of Afghanistan by next Tuesday is not so reasonable for a number of reasons. Make sure you submit your petition to the person who actually has the authority to make changes, otherwise you may up in a dead end. Do your homework. Lastly, electronic petitions are not acceptable. Period. The "signatures" can be faked on any computer. A real petition that has clout requires hand-written signature and contact information so that it's authenticity can be verified. Anything petition worth fighting for is worth doing it right, so do your homework, do the leg work and make sure you surround yourself with positive an supportive people because even the most righteous of causes can get tangled in red tape. Petitions can work. I've seen it happen.
