Wasn't it the dragon/monster Grendl? Did you know that the best known translation of Beowulf was done by JRR Tolkien?

It was first the Grendel, then it was the dragon. Beowolf faught the dragon right before he died.

Grendel... poor thing, really I beleive he wanted to be accepted and loved, et cetera, but he was a beast and rejected. Then came his mother, who, in horrid greif, attacked the village, and was killed by Beowulf. The dragon later had treaure stolen and went mad and attacked the countryside, and Beowulf then killed the dragon, however, was also fataly wounded in teh attack.
