What is the proper word to use to describe braking a car in the past tense?

    Braked.

    "I saw those gigantic hula hoops bouncing and rolling into the street. I braked hard,swerved, and then fainted."

    You could always use a different verb to make your point: “I slammed on my brakes." or, "I hit the brakes." What else works? Broke? Only if you stomp on the brakes so hard that they... malfunction. "Yikes! I broke my brakes."

    Braked. Brake, the verb having to do with stopping, for example, a car, is a regular verb, meaning it has all its usual endings.
    Break, to separate into parts, is irregular, of course, in the simple past tense and the past participle. (Break, broke, broken, breaking, breaks = its whole verbal family.)
