After a seratonin depleting weekend, (if you know what I mean) my friends and I sometimes take a drug called "5htp". It definately helps take the edge off the next day. It is also a good idea to use it before seratonin depleting activities. I live in Western Australia and get ours from a local market over the counter. I'm not sure of it's status in other countries. Hope this helps. Viva La Weekend!

5htp is 5 hydroxy tryptophan. it's also the chemical in turkey meat that makes you sleepy.

There are several ways to boost serotonin levels.

The extract of Griffonia seed, called 5-HTP is a direct precursor to serotonin (it gets converted very easily).

Amino acids L-tyrosine stimulate most major neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine), and L-tryptophan (not available in the USA because of a bad batch that sickened people in the 1990s) is directly converted to serotonin and widely considered the most powerful.

St. John's wort has been clinically shown to be a serotonin-reuptake-inhibitor very similar in action to Prozac or Zoloft.

Exotic plants like Banisteriopsis caapi and Peganum harmala act as MAO inhibitors, and they reduce the rate at which serotonin and other neurotransmitters are deactivated in the brain by a chemical call monoamine oxidase.

Never take these concurrently with SSRI/antidepressant medication without professional advice, because excessive serotonin levels can cause a potentially fatal syndrome called Serotonin Syndrome, characterized by fever, hyperactivity, malaise, muscle twitching, elevated heartbeat, coma, seizures.

Never promote suicide, since someone may take you up on it.
