Question

Help answer this question below.

My Jeep Grand Cherokee engine will not turn over and the starter won't click. I pulled out the keys from the ignition and the gauges were moving all over the place. There is an electrical-type sound coming from the engine. What's wrong?

Generally if you hear a whirring from the engine compartment, or a repeated clicking, this means the starter solenoid (a mechanical switch that engages the starter) is still functioning but there is not enough battery current to going to the starter. This is a good sign because you know your solenoid isn't the problem.

Replace the battery or jump start the vehicle. If it won't start, your starter is probably dead or there is a ground fault caused by a frayed wire touching the chassis (check the alternator wires!). A classic symptom of a frayed wire ground-fault is random gauge spinning and other electrical weirdness.

If it starts but keeps failing to start after being jumped, and the battery is new, then the alternator is worn so that it no longer charges the battery properly. This is the eventual fate of all alternators since they use DC-motor style brushes that wear out over time.

Check the belt tension on the alternator before you replace it to make sure it's not just a belt slipping.

hey I've got a jeep Cherokee and it was working fine until one day when i went to start it the gauges went all over the place and the starter wasn't doing anything luckily my dad is a technical person, he made me take out the starter and go to napa to get it tested they tested it 3 times and said it worked great. so i put it back in and my dads boss has the same jeep and so did his dad and he said the switch goes bad in the ignition and that it's a $400 dollar part so we added some wires and things from the battery and put in about a 5 dollar switch so when you want to start it the key must be in the ON positon and then press the button and now it works great.

BASICALLY ADD A SWITCH TO THE STARTER WIRE ADD TO THE BATT AND WALLA TAKES ABOUT 20 MIN IF YOUR A TECHNICAL PERSON.
