My laptop is wireless enabled but i dont have a desktop and i want wireless internet. i bought a wireless router but it still had to be plugged into the back of my laptop. my broadband is through cable provider. any ideas plaese

• True. You need one computer hooked to the router by CAT5 to set it up but once that is done you can ditch the wire.
  Fortunately for me, I have a desktop so I never had to hook my laptop up since I could configure the router through a system that was already plugged in.

  Seriously though, you are going to want to enable a few things for a secure connection.
  WPA2 is mandatory unless you want anybody in the neighborhood picking up every piece of data you send (including banking info) and/or you want your neighbors to get free internet without your knowledge or consent.
  MAC Filtering is another nice thing. Basically, only certain systems can get onto your router. If the MAC address from their Ethernet/wifi card isn't on the approved list them your router will totally ignore them. Think of it as a fingerprint lock.
  Also, I do not broadcast my SSID. Unless you know the name of my router, you won't find it. Makes wardriver's lives a bit harder.
