From my experience you need to plug the wireless router into the computer once to set up the network, after that you can unplug it and use it anywhere you like!
Also, the modem needs to be plugged into the router (obvious but worth stating)

    RTFM...

This means, your router comes normally with an installation manual. It describes exactly the steps you have to take to set up your wireless network.

I also suggest that you install the security feature to avoid your neighbors to use your WLAN.

As for your computer, you will just need to know how to start the WLAN interface. It is not always started automatically. Here again, this should be described in your computer documentation.

Speaking from personal experience, wireless works without connecting to a desktop first. My cable modem is connected to a wired router which is then connected to the wireless router. The wireless router sans the wired router would not work. After connecting everything, I was able to configure the wireless station through my laptop. The wireless station emitted a signal as soon as it was connected correctly. Once my laptop got that signal I was able to configure the network so that it was secure.
