Question

Help answer this question below.

My 1994 Blazer V-6 has what is apparently a heater core issue. When I move the hot/cold switch, smoke appears from underneath the dashboard and there is a strong odor of antifreeze. I would like to know if this is a symptom of the heater core going out.

It could be. If hot coolant is leaking out and touching the hot heater core then it will burn and smoke. The problem with the heater core is that while the part is cheap, the labour to get it out isn't. To remove the heater core usually requires pulling out the entire dash since it's right against the firewall. It will be expensive to fix. Before laying down money for that job try a stop-leak formula for cooling systems to see if that fixes the problem. Couple bucks should do it.
