Disregarding the professional singles game, I would think that the best playing position in a singles match is in the center of the court, halfway between the side alley lines, at the baseline. By positioning yourself at either side of the court (left versus the right) your opponent could more easily hit the ball to the opposite side, forcing you to run to ball and making it more difficult to repositions yourself for the shot. In terms of distance from the net, I think it depends on the type of shot your opponent makes and the type of player you are. If your opponent is a defensive player, meaning he or she plays well behind the baseline, it may be advantageous to play more at the net with more aggressive shots, which tend to give the easiest/most points in a match. It is difficult to make clean winners from a baseline rally, unless you are an expert in hitting passing shots or angle shots. :) [Though one thing to keep in mind when playing at the net--it is much easier for your opponent to lob the ball over your head which drives you backwards to get the ball and thus play defensively, which will reduce the chance of you scoring a point against him/her.] If your opponent is playing aggressively it would be in your advantage to play defensively because it is easier to estimate where the shot is going to be placed and for you to have more time to react because you have a greater distance separating you from your opponent and his/her shot [shots from the net usually can be hit with more pace and thus can be more difficult to get if you are close to the net too.] Generally you have to respond and react to your opponent's play to determine the best playing position, and I think would constantly change through the duration of the match.
