I was a volunteer for the Navy version of JROTC, the Sea Cadets, for many years. I believe that the only one who can change a troubled kid is the kid. The only person any of us is really in charge of is ourself. What helps in the military training programs is that the cadet learns discipline. They learn how to follow orders, and why it is important to work as part of a unit. Any cadet that cannot see the value of discipline will not benefit from these lessons, but most have never actually seen a working unit in action. Once they do, they can improve their lives.
