Bupropion is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, and it increases the overall concentration of dopamine in the central nervous system by reducing the deactivation of dopamine by monoamine oxidase (MAO) Dopamine is an essential neurotransmitter and increases the rate of interaction between nerve cells. A large systemic increase in dopamine, such that you would see with bupropion, inceases the activity of the entire nervous system, including the heart and lungs. Sinus tachycardia (elevated heartbeat in the upper intake portion of the heart) is a common effect of bupropion. Dopamine is frequently used intravenously in severe cardiac emergencies (low blood pressure) to increase the heart rate until the patient can be stabilized with equipment.
