Sam leaps into a mining town bar, as himself. Interestingly enough, the miners are all characters from past episodes, only with different names. There is also an old broken down Russian miner with bad breath their named Gooshie. Sam, stunned by the coincidences he is encountering, keeps getting little bits of wisdom from a bartender. The bartender is vague about who he really is. Sam finally asks the bartender if he is God; in which the bartender replies, "What do you think?" By the time Al finally arrives (Ziggy could not get a track on where Sam was), Sam has been convinced by the bartender that he controls where he leaps. Sam then leaps back to a previous episode, where he encounters Al's ex-wife Beth (who had married another man while Al was a POW in the Vietnam War). Sam convinces her that Al is alive, and to hold out hope for his return. Sam then leaps. The final images are of a picture of Al and Beth together. After this image, it says that Sam was never heard from again.

In some kind of between place, Sam Beckett, 'meets' the man, who is sending him through time, to 'fix' lives! and when it come down to the choice of going home, OR being able to fix, "Al's life! Sam, chooses to fix, Al's life, and Al goes back home, after the war, and his wife is waiting for him, instead of having had divorced him! It was a real tear jerker! and Sam, continued leaping!!

The final episode of Quantum Leap is titled MIRROR IMAGE. AUGUST 8, 1953. Sam finally leaps back into himself (at the pinpoint of his birth, 12:30pm) landing in a mining town in Cokesburg, Pennsylvania. Yes, the patrons of the bar are mostly all "mirror images" of people from previous episodes. The normal formula for any series finale to bring back characters from throughout the series.
