I do start with 1 down (or across depending on how they're listed) and skim them looking for ones I know immediately off the top of my head. Then I go back and look at ones that require more thought and/or searching.

I start with 1 down, and then go through all the easy clues I can do. Then I go back and irritate the hell out of everybody around me until they help me complete it.

Random. I hate uniformity.<-------(is that a word?):)

I start with all the three letter words that I see and all the questions that involve a blank. These are good questions to tackle first because it gives me headway on the CW grid. My randomness is based upon sound reasoning that by answering the easiest questions will enable me to answer the longer and tougher ones later on. I then look for the questions that I know the answer to and systematically nail each more progressively difficult question. I do the daily Crossword, well, daily.

I start off from 1 across, but if I cannot get one, I will try the downwards to see if I can work out the across. I end up quite random. LOL
