  • The spark plugs are located somewhere on the engine block. You should be able to follow the spark plug wires (there should be 4 of them) to the spark plugs (there will be 4 total since your Corolla most likely has a 4-cylinder engine). To remove them, you will probably need a certain-sized deep socket and a ratchet. Simply set the ratchet to the unscrew setting, attach the socket, put the ratchet over one of the spark plugs, and unscrew. When screwing in the new spark plugs, be careful not to apply too much force once the spark plug is snug. Applying a lot of force can cause your socket to slip off at an angle, and possibly crack the ceramic part of the spark plug. If you only have one car, I would purchase 5 spark plugs at the car shop...just to be safe. :) When you're done, push the spark plug wires back down so that they are firmly attached the spark plugs. If you car has 100,000 miles, and the spark plug wires have never been changed, you might want to change them too. If you change the wires, it is important to replace one wire at a time and lay the new wire in the exact order and position of the old wire. If you change the order or how the wires cross each other, you could get a misfire.
  • The spark plugs are located at the top of each cylinder. You will see a wire going down into a hole (one wire per cylinder, so in your case 4 wires) and if you gently pull on that wire you will see the plug. As for changing them: Not the same vehicle but here's the huge answer I did a while ago that nobody seems to be able to find. Just ignore the parts about the wires: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/174096 --- You will need many tools. I think I already answered a question like this and I could copy/paste it, but I'm too lazy to find it. Tools: -Ratchet with spark plug socket (there are two sizes of these sockets so be sure to get the correct one) -Gloves (optional yet recommended) -New plugs -Spark plug gapping tool -New wires -book with proper spark plug gap information -2 containers - one for new parts one for old parts -Masking tape Method: 1. Find proper spark plug gap in manual/online 2. Using gapping tool, gap all plugs correctly. (double-check after doing so) 3. Start engine, and remember the noise it makes. Then, open the hood 4. Remove any shrouding, etc that blocks access to plugs 5. Remove ONE wire and set into old parts bin 6. Remove the exposed spark plug using ratchet and SP socket 7. Place old plug into old parts bin 8. Hand-start new spark plug into exposed hole, tightening to a stop with ratchet. Then, once it stops turning, give it a very slight extra push (a few mm extra) 9. Install new wire exactly as old one was installed. 10. Mark installed wire with a piece of tape (this is so you can tell the new ones from the old ones) 11. Repeat steps 5-10 for all additional plugs and wires. 12. When finished, double (or triple) check all connections, making sure they are correct and tight. Then remove all tape (all wires should have tape on them - if they don't then make sure you didn't forget one) 13. Replace any shrouding that was removed before install. 14. Close hood, dispose of old parts (although I suggest storing them for a bit in case the new ones have a problem) and start engine. Listen for any odd noises - it should sound exactly as it did before, or better. You're done! *Remember to take your time - a rushed job could come back to bite you. Hope this helps, Good luck ---
