I have a small tattoo on both my thumbs and one on my finger,(and three on the side of my hand). I got to say, they don't tickle! Not an unbearable pain, but not a good place if you are just starting out. Pick a small place elsewhere for starters, just to see what it feels like. Don't know about England, but they start at around $40.00 here, (U.S.A.).

It will probably hurt some, and it will probably fade over time. So most places will charge more (if the UK is like the US in that sense) because you'll need touchups. It's not something I'd get for a first tattoo, since it's so visible and you'll probably need to have it recolored. Some artist won't do things on hands if you have no other tattoos.
