Early in the development of wireless phone networks, the enigneers designing the technology realized it would be easier to divide an area into "cells", each using their own frequency. Because phones that were in different cells operated on a slightly different frequency, the network was able to support more users.
Each cell is served by a "cell site", which is a transceiver station that communicates with the phone itself.
These "cells" are the reason we have the word "cellular."
