Spray all the cords with a solution of "bitter orange." It is available in most pet stores.

"Bitter apple" is probably what the previous person was thinking of. You can also mix water and tobasco sauce and put it on the cord, if it's not exposed a lot. This can get pretty strong-smelling, but the kitten won't taste it more than once, if you make sure it's strong enouhg.
