  • We have a cabinet in the UK too, not that they are much good :-) I looked up the meaning of cabinet and when used as an adjective some meanings are private; confidential; secret. and pertaining to a private room. I guess it comes from there.
  • The term Cabinet originated in British politics to refer to the inner group with whom the Prime Minister consulted, rather than the larger group he "ought" to have consulted. The term cabinet literally means cupboard, but was often used to refer to a small room in which, naturally, very few people could consult. The group which the Cabinet ousted was the "Privy Council" or private council - the same sort of insider group from a few hundred years before. Likewise, now that the Cabinet is a formally recognized institution, we refer to an "Inner Cabinet" or, in the UK, "Tony's Cronies" who make all the actual decisions, which are referred up to the Cabinet, which theoretically acts on behalf of the Privy Council, which theoretically advises the Queen. Bullshit baffles brains.
  • In the US, we refer to them as the Cabinet because at night when we are not using them, we lock them up in a special cabinet so that can't do anymore harm than they did during the day.
  • 'Cause he couldn't fit all that crap in a dresser;)
